Pono – Part Three: The PonoPlayer

I spent the past five days with the PonoPlayer. On and off, mind you — I put it down for, like, 15 minutes or so, every so often. I didn’t want it to get, like, weird. It’s just a gadget. Just a gadget. Just a gadget. The PonoPlayer is Neil Young’s Kickstarted entry into the …

Pono – Part One: The Unboxing

My Pono Kickstarter premium arrived on Friday morning. The Neil Young LE PonoPlayer was packaged in a lovely bamboo box with the PONO logo carved (embossed? branded?) into the front. Accompanying the PonoPlayer was an AC plug, Micro-SD card, USB cable, a leather zipper pouch, a Welcome card from Neil Young, and an instructional brochure. …

Another new post on Confessions of a Part-Time Audiophile

I wrote some more music reviews for Confessions of a Part-Time Audiophile. The latest installment includes brief paragraphs about new-ish releases from Brian Eno, Neil Young, Carla Bozulich, Charles Hayward, and vinyl reissues: Linda Perhacs’ Parallelograms and selections from the 1968 Rosemary’s Baby score by Christopher Komeda. Since I wrote the piece, it’s been announced …

Pono Listening Party – the Video!

Pono has posted a 40-minute promotional video of the August 1st Pono party. By RSVP’ing to the event, I understood that I was giving them my consent to use these images or video recordings, yeah. And I’d like to go on record again as stating that I hate the fuckin’ Eagles, man. First PonoMusic Listening …

Pono Listening Party, San Francisco, 8/1/14 – Part Two

In part two I write about how Pono sounds without headphones, and ponder the short- and long-term possibilities of Neil Young’s new high-resolution portable playback device. Thanks, as always, to Confessions of a Part-Time Audiophile for making room for my contributions.

Pono Listening Party, San Francisco, 8/1/14 – Part One

My first-hand first impressions of Neil Young’s Pono hardware were posted today on Confessions of a Part-Time Audiophile. Part two is soon to follow.

Pono: “What’s Your Cut?”

If you’ve watched The Good Wife, you know about witness prep. It’s where attorneys run a mini-mock trial with their witness on the imaginary stand, and ask questions…then cross-examine. It’s the best way to see how poised the witness is, and prepare him or her for the best way to bat away curveballs from the …

Pono Kickstarter Now Up

The Kickstarter page for Neil Young’s Pono project is now live. Pono (the service) will presumably sell FLAC, “although the PonoPlayer can play most popular high-res music formats from other sources”. The unit features headphone and analog-out mini jacks…but no digital outs. Among the premiums: a vanilla (well, black or yellow) model is $300. Engraved/limited …

Pono

Computer Audiophile got an exclusive this morning on the announcement of Neil Young’s Pono high-resolution portable music player and music service. The hardware and service will be elaborated upon at South By Southwest in the coming week, but Kickstarter is a verified element of the launch. The CA thread is a perfect internet audiophile microcosm …
