Kaua’i Votes To Limit Big Box Stores to 75,000 Sq. Ft.
My favorite place, the island of Kaua’i, has a population of nearly 60,000. It’s also visited by nearly 20,000 tourists each day.
It currently hosts a Costco, Wal-Mart and Home Depot, as well.
Yesterday its county council voted to restrict new ‘big box’ stores to 75,000 square feet in most non-rural areas.
That loophole could make things interesting. The majority of Kaua’i is rural. The (relatively urban) stretch of highway from Kapa’a to Lihue suffers from horrible traffic problems due to the tourist influx, overdevelopment and narrow roads. Locating new big-box stores away from those areas may just extend the traffic nightmare into the remaining quiet spaces surrounding the Kuhio Highway corridor (such as it is).

Another Post About Why I Haven’t Been Posting
* I’m looking for a new place to live. My present rental has been sold and the new owners have grand plans for the space, as well as the lot next door. These plans include much noise, dust, and disruption. A move back to the woods is in order.
* Work. I’m training an assistant. That’s right, an assistant. Praise be.
* I’m attempting to coordinate a rotating ensemble of catsitters to take care of things while I’m away in mid-late June.
It’s not that I don’t love you, it’s just that I’ve been, like, rilly busy.
